PSP

Preface

Pet Supplies Plus required a website revamp. The client needed something modern but fun. The clientele was first-time pet owners with busy schedules. When creating this site I kept this in mind and made everything as seamless as possible in accordance with the brand.

Role: UX/UI Designer

Tools: Figma

Timeline: 2 months

The Challenge

The owner of Pet Supplies Plus saw people were ordering online more than they were in person. So they wanted to make things quicker and easier. Everyone who walked into their store was no longer browsing, they were in and out within minutes.

The Solution

I created pages that were organized into: the kind of pet people were shopping for, featured brands, and popular treats. This way customers could scroll right to where they are looking quickly and efficiently.

Hero

Equipped with full air conditioning, a private pool, 3 on-suite bedrooms, and a spacious open living room kitchen area, Sunshine Bay Residences is an excellent choice for anyone dreaming of their own safe haven.

Competitive Analysis

Small pet stores cater to local communities by offering personalized service and unique products, setting them apart from large retail chains and online marketplaces. Their strengths lie in their ability to provide specialized knowledge and tailored advice, fostering strong customer relationships. Additionally, small pet stores often carry high-quality, niche products and actively engage in community events and local collaborations, which enhance their local presence and customer loyalty. However, they face challenges such as limited product ranges, higher prices due to lower purchasing volumes, and often a less robust online presence, making it difficult to compete with the extensive inventories and lower prices of larger competitors.

Opportunities for small pet stores include embracing digital transformation by developing e-commerce platforms and utilizing social media for marketing to reach a broader audience. Offering subscription services for essential supplies and focusing on niche markets like organic pet food or eco-friendly products can also drive growth. Enhancing the in-store experience through events and personalized services can further differentiate them. However, they must navigate threats such as competition from large chains with more resources, the growing preference for online shopping, economic downturns affecting discretionary spending, and supply chain issues that can lead to stock shortages. By leveraging their strengths and addressing their weaknesses, small pet stores can thrive in a competitive market.

Persona

When creating the PSP website I had to remember who I was designing for. Courtney is a busy business owner who doesn't have time to be shopping around every day.

Research

Overview

The pet care industry is booming, with pet owners increasingly viewing their pets as family members and seeking the best products for their well-being. However, many pet owners face significant time constraints, making it challenging to shop for their pets. An app designed to streamline the pet shopping process could address these pain points effectively.

Key Insights

Demographics and Pet Ownership Trends

  • Pet ownership is widespread, with 67% of U.S. households owning a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA).

  • Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly becoming pet parents, with many of them balancing work, family, and social commitments.

Time Constraints

  • Busy Lifestyles: Many pet owners juggle multiple responsibilities, including full-time jobs, family care, and social activities, leaving limited time for pet shopping.

  • Working Hours: Long working hours and commutes further reduce the time available for shopping, leading to a preference for quick and convenient shopping solutions.

Current Shopping Habits

  • In-Store Shopping: Traditional in-store shopping can be time-consuming, with pet owners needing to travel to the store, browse through products, and wait in lines.

  • Online Shopping: While online shopping is more convenient, it still requires time for searching, comparing products, and reading reviews. Additionally, delivery times can vary, adding a layer of uncertainty.

Pain Points in Pet Shopping

  • Product Overload: The vast array of products available can be overwhelming, leading to decision fatigue.

  • Urgent Needs: Pet owners often need to buy products urgently, such as food or medications, which can be stressful if not easily accessible.

  • Personalization: Finding products that suit specific pet needs, preferences, or dietary restrictions can be time-consuming.

Desired Features in a Pet Shopping App

  • Personalization: Tailored recommendations based on pet type, breed, age, and health conditions to reduce the time spent searching for appropriate products.

  • Subscription Services: Options for auto-reordering essential items like food, litter, and medications to ensure timely replenishment.

  • Quick Reordering: Easy reordering of frequently purchased items with minimal clicks.

  • Fast Delivery: Reliable and fast delivery options, including same-day or next-day delivery.

  • Comprehensive Product Information: Detailed product descriptions, reviews, and ratings to facilitate quick decision-making.

  • Bundling Options: Offers on product bundles (e.g., food, toys, and treats) to save time and money.

Behavioral Insights

  • Mobile Usage: A significant number of pet owners use mobile devices for shopping, indicating a strong potential for a mobile-first shopping solution.

  • App Usage: Pet owners are likely to adopt an app that integrates seamlessly with their daily routines and offers time-saving features.

  • Trust and Loyalty: Building trust through reliable service and personalized experiences can foster customer loyalty and encourage repeat use of the app.
